General Information and Call for Papers

Megacities are the main motors and laboratories of change. Dhaka megacity/Bangladesh has experienced massive urban growth during the last decades. These dynamics have been accompanied by major changes in all urban spheres including the urban economies, the social and cultural spheres and the urban physiognomy. Combined with a lack of urban steering new social, health and ecological challenges result from economic development and the massive growth of the urban population.

This is the fifth and final Regional Conference in Dhaka of the Priority Program 1233 "Megacities Megachallenge: Informal Dynamics of Global Change" funded by the German Research Foundation. In the frame of the program researchers from Bangladesh, China and Germany have worked on main processes and challenges of urban development trying to conceptualize the increasingly complex, globalized and informal dynamics in both cities during the last six years (2006-2012). The conference will serve as a forum to present, discuss and exchange major final results and implications for future research and practice with external participants. Experts from the urban administration, members from non-governmental, grassroots and community organizations, professionals and academics from all different disciplines and universities are invited to join to present their work and for joint discussions. Paper presentations and posters are accepted. Presentations should have a maximum length of 20min
