Background

In 1989, the first international conference on the Development and Education of Geography in China and Germany was held in the Department of Geography, Sun Yat-Sen University. Professor HUANG Bingwei from Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor LIN Chao from Beijing University, and Professor Manfred Domroes from Mainz University extended their great support to the conference.

Scholars and experts from 41 Chinese universities, research institutes, and publishing houses, together with nine professors from different German universities, as well as scholars from Hong Kong and the Netherlands participated in the conference. This successful conference greatly promoted the communication and development of Geography Departments in Chinese and German universities.

Twenty years on, we now announce with great pleasure that the Second International Conference on Geographical Higher Education, Research and Application in China and Germany will be held in the School of Geography and Planning, Sun Yat-Sen University again. This is of special significance. Back in 1929, the very first geography Department in Chinese universities was established in Sun Yat-Sen University. Professor Wilhelm Credner and Professor Wolfgang Panzer from Germany were the first and second head of the Department. A number of first-rate geographers, including several academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor HUANG Bingwei, Professor Zhou Tingru, and Professor ZHOU Lisan, were graduated from Sun Yat-Sen University during that time. Since then, the Department of Geography (now the School of Geography and Planning) at Sun Yat-Sen University has been actively and constantly contributing to the development of Geographical education and research in China. Over the three decades of economic reform, communication and exchange activities between Chinese and German universities are becoming more and more frequent and diverse, particularly after the launch of a series activities of “Germany and China Moving ahead together” under the joint patronage of Germany’s federal president Horst Köhler and China’s president Hu Jintao, and the sponsorship from DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst). Against this backdrop, this conference will provide a platform for further communication and mutual-learning between Chinese and German Geographers. It is also a ceremony for the 80th anniversary of the establishment of Geography Department at Sun Yat-Sen University.

Conference themes

This conference has three themes, geographical higher education, geographical research, and the application of geographical sciences in China and Germany. It also aims to create further opportunities to develop long-term cooperation and exchange programs between geography departments/schools in China and Germany.
